10 Steps to Hosting a Successful Event: A Beginner's Guide

Hosting an event can be a daunting task, especially for those who are new to event planning. But with the right approach and preparation, anyone can host a successful event. Here are the 10 steps to follow when planning your next event:

  1. Determine your event's purpose and goals - What type of event are you hosting? What is the goal? Fun? Educational? Memorable?

  2. Set your budget - Be sure to include things like the venue, decorations, planning, food & entertainment. Don’t forget things like security and bartending services depending on the event and venue rules.

  3. Choose a date and time for the event - START EARLY! The sooner you start planning the more options you will have for all the different products and services you may need.

  4. Choose a venue that fits your needs and budget - Do you just need the basics? Or do you want a full service venue? Budget and desires must be aligned to ensure you find the right place for you.

  5. Choose your event format and structure - Some events are less structured but others have strict timelines to adhere to.

  6. Determine your guest list and invite attendees - PRO TIP: Be sure that you’ve locked in the date and time with you venue and key vendors (planner, caterer, entertainment, etc.)

  7. Plan and book your catering and other vendors - Always ask for references from the venue, planners, friends and family. Stay tuned for a more detailed post for finding the right vendor.

  8. Plan your decorations and event aesthetics - Find inspiration for websites like Pinterest, Instagram and others.
